The Chatty Caterpillars had a fantastic opening day on the farm. We kicked off our week by introducing and describing farm animals. As always, we had a blast playing together on the playground...

After a refreshing snack, we gathered to read a book. Today's book was "The Cow That Laid an Egg" by Andy Cutbill. The story is about Marjorie, an insecure cow who wishes she had a special talent. One morning, Marjorie discovers something extraordinary about herself (thanks to a bunch of scheming chickens and a paintbrush): she laid an egg!
After reading, we discussed elements of the story that were real vs. the ones that were pretend. For instance, cows cannot lay eggs (pretend), but they do produce milk (real). We then looked at the different emotions Marjorie experienced throughout the story: sad, happy, embarrassed, surprised, and bored. The caterpillars loved expressing each of these emotions and identifying the pictures of Marjorie that matched them.
To go along with today's cow theme, we did a science experiment with milk. First, we all got a plate of milk and two drops of food coloring. Then, we predicted what would happen when we touched the drops with a cotton swab dipped in soap. Some predicted it would make the color disappear while others predicted the colors would change.
Much to our surprise, the drops of colors expanded and swirled together; in some cases, the drops combined to make new colors!
We had some builders on the loose today. We loved using our blocks during centers to build a farm for our animals!
The day would not have been complete without making a cow to take home as a reminder of this special day on the farm. We made our cows have silly ears, crazy legs, and unique thumb print spots.
We wrapped up our day by singing our week's theme song: "To The Farm." What a great start to, what will be, a fabulous week!
