Center Time - Week 2

 This week, "On The Farm," we will incorporate communication skills during our center time.

Blocks: Build a barn to shelter farm animals.

• Communication Goal: Name animals and what they do and eat.  Describe position (in, on, under, etc.) of blocks and animals.  Use sentences to describe objects.

Dramatic Play: Use our imagination to complete farm chores, such as: milking cows, feeding farms animals, and gathering eggs.

• Communication Goal: Interact with peers and work together to complete tasks; increase vocabulary; use sentences to describe role in the play activity. 

Literacy: Numerous books will be provided about farms and animals.  Clinicians will be available and willing to read and/or assist in stimulating communication.

• Communication Goal: Focus on a story for at least 3-5 minutes; answer questions about stories selected; comment on pictures and story.

Sensory Table: Play with ducks and pigs in shaving cream "mud".

• Communication Goal: Use sentences to describe texture, practice taking turns.

Small Manipulatives: Match cards that compare farm animals of different sizes (big, bigger; small, smaller); or children can complete a farm animal puzzle.

• Communication Goal: Identify "bigger" or "smaller"; use farm vocabulary words; use problem solving and work together to finish the puzzle

We will also have various cues available in the classroom:

• Literacy: Various books about farm animals available for reading.
• Visual Cues: Pictures that go with the lyrics of songs; chicken life cycle; letters paired with pictures to complete word families; props and prompts (puppets, vocabulary words, etc.)
• Written Cues: Picture cards with name of farm animals and the labeled life cycle of a chicken.   There will also be written cues regarding daily schedule, simple directions, and classroom rules.
• Graphic Organizers: We will use multiple diagrams during our lessons including prediction charts in our science experiments, Venn diagrams comparing two similar books, flow maps during literacy and science for sequencing events of the story and life cycles of animals.
