Last Day of Camp!

The last day of camp for the Chatty Caterpillars was all about fish and rainbows!

In morning circle we learned a new song, to the tune of "I'm a Little Tea Pot"

Then we demonstrated our proven skills in turn-taking and sharing on the playground.

                   

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister was our book of the day.  It's about a beautiful rainbow-colored fish, who can't make any friends because he doesn't want to share his shiny scales.  He finally realizes that sharing makes him happy, and gives away all but one of his scales, so that the whole school of fish can be the most beautiful in the ocean.

We mapped out the story, talking about the characters, setting, problem, resolution, and main events. 

 Each camper earned their own "rainbow scales" for participating.  These were used later for our art project.

Our science experiment today was making "a rainbow in a cup" using liquids of different densities.  After examining the different colored liquids (pancake syrup, oil, soap, water, and rubbing alcohol) and thinking about their qualities, we hypothesized which liquids would go to the top or bottom of the layer as we poured them into the cup.

                 

 

The end result was a rainbow in a cup!  We found that the heavier, sticky liquids like the syrup and soap went to the bottom and the lighter liquids like oil and the rubbing alcohol went to the top!

Next was Center Time.  

Campers played their favorite beach bingo game...

went "fishing" for beach items...

... and used "moon sand" to sculpt fish.

Then it was time for art!  Using triangles of different shapes and sizes, campers made their very own rainbow fish, complete with fins, tail, and rainbow scales.

To close out the day we sang our beach songs of the week, did the "fishy" poky, and danced the chicken dance with our friends one final time for good measure.
