The Chatty Caterpillars were very excited for their second day "On the Farm". After morning circle, there were good times to be had playing with friends and sand.
Today's book was "There's a Billy Goat in the Garden" by Laurel Dee Gugler and Clare Beaton.
In this adaptation of a Puerto Rican folk tale, an ornery billy goat is in the garden eating clothes off the line and he will NOT come out. All the other farm animals, in order of smallest to biggest, try their best to get the billy goat to leave. Finally a bumble bee comes along and wants to give it a try. The other farm animals laugh--- how could someone so small make a difference? But the bumble bee sends the stubborn billy goat running scared.
Since the animals compare their sizes in the book, campers completed a comparison activity using the words "bigger, smaller, taller, and shorter."
After talking about how a billy goat is a boy goat with horns and a beard, we then made our own goats out of paper plates.
Yesterday the Chatty Caterpillars decided that cows can't lay eggs. Today we decided that goats can't lay eggs, either. Eggs, however, make for fun experiments. Campers were asked the question "How much will the egg crack?" as it applied to six eggs with different protective wrappings. Each camper guessed if the egg would crack "a lot, a little, or not at all."
Campers then took turns dropping the eggs.
After each trial, campers passed around the egg to examine the damage.
We found that the only two eggs to survive untouched were wrapped in cotton balls or bubble wrap, because it is very soft and fluffy.
As usual, the Chatty Caterpillars finished off the day singing their favorite songs. Today we added Mary had a Little Lamb and Baa Baa Black Sheep the the repertoire. We also enjoyed singing happy birthday to Elliot today!
