First Day of Camp!

All of the Chatty Caterpillars had a great first day of camp. Everyone introduced him or herself to the class. We went over the classroom rules and schedule.

The theme of the day was "What can you find in a garden?"  With the help of campers, Miss Nicole made a list of some vegetables that are commonly found in a garden.

Today's book was "McDuff Comes Home" by Rosemary Wells.

In this story, a small dog named McDuff always enjoys relaxing in his family's garden.  One day he sees a fat rabbit in the neighbor's garden and chases it through fields and streets until the rabbit disappears into its hole.  McDuff then falls asleep in someone's vegetable garden.  When he wakes up, he does not know where he is.  The gardener, Mrs. Higgins, takes him home when she finds him.  They all celebrate McDuff's return home with a picnic in McDuff's family's garden.

Campers sequenced the story.  We put the events of the story in order using sequencing words like first, second, then, and finally.

During center time, campers could choose if they wanted to hunt for seeds in the sensory table...

make a vegetable out of play dough...

or make sandwiches with play food vegetables.

During art time we used potatoes, apples, carrots, and celery to make stamp art using paint.

Campers did a great job asking for the vegetables and colors they wanted to use for their art.

Today we started a science experiment with beans.

Each camper put three beans in a plastic bag with a wet paper towel.  We asked the question "What will happen to the bean?"  We predicted on Tuesday it will have two small leaves. On Thursday it will have two big leaves and roots. We will check back tomorrow and see if we are correct.

At the end of the day everyone enjoyed singing songs about planting seeds in the garden. We look forward to our second day of camp tomorrow!
