How Will We Get to the Beach?!

Thank you to all of the family members that joined us yesterday during lunch and music. We loved showing you all how much fun we have in the Chatty Caterpillars classroom. 

We started off today, as usual, with our "Good morning" song! We took turns picking a friend to say "Hi" to and asked them how they were doing today. Each Caterpillar was assigned a special job for the day! Miss Hillary introduced the song "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean". We found all the words that started with the letter "B" and clapped every time we sang those words. It was very silly! Next, we went over the calendar and the weather. Next, Miss Hillary introduced our book for the day How will we get to the beach? by Bridgette Luciana.

We sang a song to help us remember the days of the week.

Miss Hillary followed along with her finger so we knew when to clap.

We sang several songs while waiting for our friends to finish up in the bathroom, including "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly". Then it was time to play on the playground!

The Caterpillars put on a show for our other friend's to watch. 

We acted out several animals for our friend's to guess. 

And even performed silly dances!

We asked friends to help us climb up to the highest step on the jungle gym!

We passed the Talking Turtles on our way inside and made sure to say hi to our friends!

After snack was sat on the carpet for language circle! Miss Hillary read us a story about a girl, named Roxanne, going to the beach on a beautiful summer day.  She wanted to take five things with her; a turtle, an umbrella, a blue book, an orange ball and her baby. The story follows Roxanne as she tries all different modes of transportation to get to the beach, but none of them enable her to bring all five things with her.  So for each new mode of transportation, one item is left off while all the others are pictured. Since Roxanne tried 7 different modes of transportation, so we each took a turn determining which item didn't fit by placing pictures of the 4 objects that we did see on a piece of paper. Each child used the last picture to complete a sentence that pertained to their specific language goal.

Roxanne tried a skateboard, a hot air balloon, the bus, a bike, a car, a kayak and finally, a horse and cart to get to the beach. 

One of the ways Roxanne tried to get to the beach was on a type of boat, called a kayak. So our literacy activity today involved word families ending "oat". Each child received a letter(s) that we placed on the flag of a sailboat in front of the ending. Then we taped a picture on the body of the boat that matched the word we created. Miss Hillary held a picture of oats in one hand and the letters in the other. We practiced saying each part separately and then clapped it altogether.

During science we continued to talk about boats! We thought back to Miss Chelsea's "Sink or Float" science project from last week. We remembered light objects will float on top of the water but heavy items will sink. Our goal was to determine how many rocks will make our boat heavy enough to sink it. Each Caterpillar told Miss Hillary their guess. 

We counted along with Miss Hillary while she stamped our guesses on the chart. 

We split into two teams and took turns placing one rock in the boat at a time. 

It was exciting to see the boat float even though it was tipping!

Team 2's boat needed more rocks to make it sink! We decided it was because their rocks were smaller, and therefore, not as heavy. 

After science the Caterpillars participated in centers. Today we chose to either color on the ocean, spell our names using sea shells, or memory. 

Some Caterpillars wanted to review the rhyming words from the literacy activity. 

We politely asked our friends for more shells when we needed them. 

The Caterpillars loved finding beach objects during memory. 

We each took a break during centers to help create a thumb-print tree to thank the teachers at Saint Gabriel's for using their classroom this summer. 

The Caterpillars met on the carpet to talk about our art project. Miss Hillary introduced the Caterpillars to our new friend, Scuba Steve. We discussed how scuba diver use boats to go out to the ocean. We labeled and discussed the gear that a scuba diver needs. The Caterpillars then went over to the table to create our own scuba divers!

We decorated our oceans with foam fish to swim with our scuba divers.

During lunch we talked with our friends about swimming and reviewed the scuba diving equipment. We ended the day at closing circle by singing “I am special” and “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean". We sang goodbye to each of our friends and gave them a hug or high five. 

We sang the songs that we learned earlier this week with Miss Chelsea and Miss Hannah. 

We also sang one of our favorites, "Shake Our Sillies Out"!

We can't believe that tomorrow is already our last day of camp. We have had such a blast in the garden, on the farm, discovering things that go and tomorrow we will wrap up our week at the beach! Remember to wear your camp shirts while we celebrate all we have accomplished this month at camp!
